Education. Support. Empowerment. Every Stage.
The Menopause Education Institute (MEI), a program of the Texas CeMeis journey alone.
What Is Menopause?
Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. It is officially diagnosed after a woman has gone twelve consecutive months without a menstrual period.
Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, although it may occur earlier or later depending on individual circumstances.
Menopause is not a disease or medical condition. It is a normal stage of life that results from changes in hormone production, particularly estrogen and progesterone.
The menopause journey generally includes three stages:
Perimenopause
The transition period leading up to menopause, which can begin several years before the final menstrual period.
Menopause
The point at which a woman has gone twelve consecutive months without a menstrual cycle.
Postmenopause
The years following menopause when hormonal levels stabilize at lower levels.
Who Does Menopause Affect?
Menopause affects:
-
Women experiencing natural aging
-
Women who have undergone hysterectomy or surgical menopause
-
Cancer survivors experiencing treatment-induced menopause
-
Women with certain medical conditions
-
Families and spouses
-
Caregivers
-
Employers and coworkers
-
Communities that support women's health and wellness
Because women may spend one-third of their lives in the postmenopausal stage, understanding menopause is important for long-term health and quality of life.
