Summer break has always been a rite of passage for teens — a time for fun, freedom, and learning responsibility through summer jobs. Yet many young people today find that traditional entry-level positions are harder to secure. Research shows teen unemployment remains elevated compared with the broader labor market, and job opportunities in seasonal sectors like hospitality, retail, and recreation are growing more competitive.
Despite these challenges, nearly 41% of U.S. teens ages 16–19 were working or actively looking for work as of 2025, demonstrating resilience and eagerness to engage in the workforce. Some teens are adapting by pursuing alternative income streams — from online gigs and entrepreneurship to freelancing and financial literacy projects — while others focus on internships and skill-building roles that may not be traditional summer jobs but can boost long-term career readiness.
